View Full Version : LED park and indicator lights on a Sovereign bullbar

Chippy

I was getting pretty pee'd off with the ancient trailer lights supplied with the Sovereign bullbar .... so I changed them :D

Got them off eBay ...

Amber ....
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/TWIN-AMBER-LED-M ... m153.l1262 (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/TWIN-AMBER-LED-MARKER-LAMP-PACK-5YR-WARRANTY-BL-205AM2_W0QQitemZ310049442171QQihZ021QQcategoryZ109 602QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1742.m153.l1 262)

White ....
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/2-x-WHITE-LED-MA ... m153.l1262 (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/2-x-WHITE-LED-MARKER-LIGHT-PACK-5YR-WARRANTY-BL-205WM2_W0QQitemZ300223711665QQihZ020QQcategoryZ308 62QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1742.m153.l12 62)

They fit up fairly neat ..... just needed to round off one corner of each surround.

The whole unit is sealed in resin so its totally waterproof.

http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb188/Ch1ppy_photo/Mods/LED/LED1.jpg

The light is quite bright ... considering its only two LEDs.
http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb188/Ch1ppy_photo/Mods/LED/LED2.jpg

Here .... compare the colour of the the standard parker and the new LED.
http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb188/Ch1ppy_photo/Mods/LED/LED3.jpg

... and this is with the amber on as well.

NIce one Chippy, I must say I thought the same thing about the lights on the BB. They look like something of an old Morris Minor.

I might have to check out doing this as well.

Seems you have been hitting the old ebay a bit lately.

Top work dude but seriously, where is it all going to stop?

Call it a bit fussy but I was looking at getting LED globes to fit into the four front park positions. They are very yellow compared to the fatboys.

Everything is YELLOW compared to the Fatboys !!

I'm with you on this one .... the difference between the light output of the two is quite ugly.

Hi Chippy,
Good job mate, mine are rusting and the truck is only 6 months old.

The other one I've looked at a couple of times is the fog lights. Mine got filled with mud the first time I went out with you lot and they've never been the same since. Mind you, a lot of things on my car have changed since I was influenced by PP!

Nicely done as always!

I'm thinking of doing the same on the ARB bar... i've done the parkers in the headlight assembly but the difference is pretty out there...

ebay... took me a while to find a decent set the majority of ones i bought either weren't very bright, or blew within a few days.

these were the ones, need to be the xenon/Hid/HP (though they are technically neither that's what they are referred to as) type bulbs.

Thanks for the tip; I was also unimpressed by the trailer lights at the front ! Decided to buy white in both cases, thinking it willl go better with the white car.

Still trying to decide the easiest and best way to change the headlights for ones that actually light up the road. I will be fitting my 400w IPF spotlights from my Disco (it's standard lights are excellent) but as I have seen in another post, the drop down from spots to Prado standard low beam will be too dramatic. Any suggestions ?

A big thanks for the write up on this one. Ordered off E-bay and after some (very hard) convincing "The Boss" relunctantly gave me the approval to mount them.

All went really well and followed by a big nod of approval from "The Boss", she now looks at other Prado's and always remarks on how much "ours" looks better than their's.

But seriously thanks for the write up it made things easier to get done.

Cheers :D

After looking at this last night it got me motivated to also replace the door courtesy lamps to white led's also...have sent an email to narva to see whether they are in the process of upgrading the current bullbar lights to a led optioned equivalent...wife likes the look of the white led in the doors and headlamp parkers but also commented that the BB needed upgrading

Is anyone able to confirm that the following are the original Narva part numbers for the park/indicator on the Sovereign bullbar:

87280 - Front Direction Indicator and Front Position Lamp RRP $30.00
87285 - Clear Lens (to suit Part No. 87280) RRP $13.50 - but incurs a $10.00 shipping fee as it has to be ordered from Narva.

Heres the bit out of the catalogue that I have for the bullbar parker light.

http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh207/waltec/Prado/ToyotaParker.jpg

I have a couple I have removed from my bullbar to fit Chippy's LEDs (shame was in Melb last weekend)

Thanks Matt.

For future reference - price quotes from various sources:

Toyota : Don't sell the lense only the full indicator assembly - $50.

Repco : $13.50 for the lense (but an addditional $10.00 for shipping cost to the store - not held in stock)
The store I spoke to had a full indicator assembly for $30.00

Autobarn : $11.99 for the lense. Not held in stock but no additional cost to get it in from the warehouse. 5 working days for delivery to store.

Out of interest, what modifications are required to fit the LED lights into the original NARVA lighting positions?

waltec
16-05-2010, 09:38 PM
I haven't fitted mine, but from Chippy's post seems a simple matter of drilling new mounting holes in the bar, filing down the corners of the LEDs (square peg, round hole), bolting them on and joining the wires (either solder or crimp)..

My plan was to make a aluminium template, I can use this to mark the hole on the bar and I can screw the LEDs on to the template to file them to shape, hopefully just turn it over to do the other side!!

Howdy all, been a while, life very busy this end for a humble Golly. No more working at the mines thanks god, so home alot more.
Question about the sovereign bar with the led's. How to wire them..... hahah

Ive had a quick look, red green and white from the factory loom goes into the ugly trailer park lights.
The LED's have red and white.... Mmmm help! if anyone can steer me in the right direction.

I have the exact lights that Chippy installed, just need the wiring setup and I'm right to go ! woot!

Cheers guys. :D

Golly,

You might have already done them over the weekend, but anyways. mine are a different model to Chippy but essentially the same lights (smaller mount - no filing required...). I just climbed under and had a look, but I've done too good a job :D - it's all shrink wrapped and in corrugated hosing, so I can't see the wires.

But...the three wires into the trailer lights are (1) power to parker, (2) power to indicator and (3) shared earth. So your 2 LEDS will share one of the wires (earth, obviously). Then you just need to figure out which one flashes and which one gets power from the parkers... I remember being half asleep when I first did it and had the parker flashing and the indicator on  When you pull the trailer light cover off, you should be able to figure out which colour does what.

It was a great mod for the Overland Telegraph Track. I used to blow globes whenever I did water crossings or deep mud, but we did heaps and heaps of water up there and they never stopped!

McBAIN
30-08-2010, 09:42 PM
i went back through my photo's from when i installed the same ones on my arb bar and the only shots i could find of the wiring had the car side of the connection taped up which is a bugger. but from memory when i did it i just put the hazards on and the parkers on and pushed the wires together until the white ones were on and the yellow ones flashed!

am going to do some tidying up one of these days before the GTG, if you haven't sussed it by then i'll let you know when i pull it all out.

Golly
31-08-2010, 12:06 PM
Coolies, so the LED's white cables no doubt share the earth, which you mount the the bar obviously ?
And the power from LED's just got to see which one does what when connected haha.. roger. Thanks guys. :D
Looking forward to the next beach run to christan the beast on sand, yet to get to that part. :D

Golly, the two earths from your LEDs will go to one of the three existing wires in the loom, not the bar. But i don't remember which colour is which.

Then do as McBain said - twist the wires in place and check that you have the correct one flicking at the correct time...

EDIT: I don't have my car here, so can't check, but if you believe the Ellery manual, the negative wire in the loom is white with black thread. If I am reading it correctly, the indicator should be Dark Green. Start with that and see what happens

Correct Fishut, thanks mate. Got them finally installed. Made a stuff up with the allowance for the black surrounds, so installed them without. They look cool enough but the end product is why I installed them, those trailer park lights looked shocking.

The LED lights arrived today. They are a completely sealed unit and is a direct replacement with the original Narva light.
Did a quick test across the battery terminals and it looks good. Will have to wire it up and then do a side by side test with voyager4x4 at work.

Wiring is:
White: -ve common
Brown: parker
Green: indicator

Since you can't wait and I got a leave pass from the missus to head to the shed, I did a quick install and wire up. Tried to take a video but got the wrong tool for the job. This is the best I could do with the camera phone.

The LED parkers are much brighter than the standard parkers. The LED indicators are just a bit dimmer than the standard indicators.
I didn't wire up the original Sovereign bar's parkers or indicators since buying them second hand as I wanted to replace them so I have no basis for comparison. The rubber seal wasn't that great, the metal housing showed minor rusting and the lens was cracked when I overtightened the screw. So it needed a freshen up and these new lights are just right. They go straight on without any modifications.

I'll compare them with voyager4x4 tomorrow.

I'd be keen for a pair as well.

Only thing that troubled me was the fact that they are a sealed unit, meaning that the bulb could never be changed. I suppose it wouldnt matter much though considering the life you get from LEDs

I am still keen to get a set, AMTS, I seem to be always removing the cover on my originals and reseating the globes. Last service they changed the globes, but it is only due to water ingress and a little corrosion that they loose connection..
Sealed LED's would be perfect.

Wonder how they go under water... :)

The manufacturer has made some progress with the new 3-in-1 combo LED DRL/parker/indicator lights. There are 2 missing LEDs on the white ring and I will clarify why that is the case. There's probably mounting screws there, which if it is the case, I will get them to move it to two of the orange ones instead.

Anyway so i tested them...figures out that the white goes to the black and white on the car (earth) and i tried the other wires until something happened...now ive got the white light to work when the headlights are on (not the sidelights/parkers tho) and the indicators dont work at all...have i plugged them into the wrong part of the loom? Help!

Not sure which connector you are referring to as I haven't checked my Prado yet. But when removing the old lights, I used the 3 wires that came off the back of it.

The white LEDs come on with the parkers and the indicators worked as they should.

Keep us updated as my mrs has actually commented on the yellowed casing of the original lights. That as good as a go ahead for the new ones in my books.

I got a bar but the old parker lights didnt have wires coming out the back and were in rotten condition hence the change. Now i have aquired the led type ones with the wires coming out the back but i was hoping there was an official toyota connector for them somewhere on the loom as im not keen on piggy backing the lights onto exposed wires....sorry a bit of a neat freak when it comes to mods :o)

You might have a problem then. Toyotas answer in fitting the sovereign bar lights is to strip back a bit of insulation behind the existing lights next to headlights and solder and tape. Not very professional but how they tell you to do it. The plug you are trying to connect your lights to is probable the original plug for the "driving" lights.

Sparksy is right. Have a look at the Sovereign bullbar fitting instructions where at the end you will find the wiring info.

I have found some led lights for sovereign Bar that also have drl's. I am still trying to load some pictures of the install. I will do this in the next few days. They were around $40 for the set.

Hi. I'd also be interested in the link..i.e where you sourced them from, although I'm sure we'd all greatly appreciate pics too, to see how they look compared to the 'old trailer lights'. I'd be interested in a set of these, so any info you provide would be greatfully received! Thanks.

I have just posted a few photos of the led light. They will be released next month I think. Will post link when available. Ithink somewhere between $40 and $50 a set. The first Pic the drivers side is the DRL.

Many thanks my Prado. They look just the job and being DRL's too is a nice addition. Not sure the Narva one's are..could see no mention. I'll gladly hang around till a link is posted some time in the future. Again, thx for the pics.

Just went and priced a set of the Narva LED lights. The original ones cost $27 each and the LED replacement ones are $105 each!!!!!! At that sort of pricing I will be staying with what is fitted.

They are the same as the ones fitted on mine. i.e. they are not DRLs.

So in your opinion what's the best replacement for the stockies? In terms of value for money. There's been quite a few ebay links here and it's not easy to decide

I'm also looking for the best replacement scenario for my 2005 Prado with factory Bar, just noticed the right side indicator wasn't working and once I removed the cover I found out why, the whole thing is corroded and pretty much dead, so if anyone has any options please advise.
Cheers!

Hi all, The lights I found last month were supposed to be released this month. I have found out that they have made a few adjustment to make fitment easier.I am told that they in production now and will be released soon. You will have a choose to have DRL or not. I think the Price is still around $50 a set.

Finally, success! Photos below are of the new Sovereign bullbar lights which consists of DRLs, parkers and indicators. Photos only show it in DRL mode - the dimmer photo is setting my camera phone with less exposure so the ring of DRL is more visible. I'll need to take more photos with a better camera. I still need to work out the lens diffuser for the lights and that should hopefully be it.

That's right. Didn't think the DRL version was going to happen back then. Then they turned up this week after building my own prototype, countless comms, fed them circuit diagrams, etc. Happy to work something out for previous 'customers'.

I'm happy with the ones I got previously ie Revision 1.0 :) don't really need DRL. Mind you I'm planning on installing 1.0 this weekend.

I'm guessing DRL turn on as soon as the engine is on AND the postition lights are off? Wonder how that's wired hmmm interesting

amts
12-07-2013, 03:56 PM
Yeah, that was the hard bit to work out but I have made it all a pretty simple install. All the smarts is inside the light. All you need is a feed from ignition, which is available from the fusebox behind the battery and the other 3 wires are as per normal - ground, parker and indicator tapped from behind the connector at the headlights. So the only difference is the extra wire that is fed from the ignition. So as soon as the key is in the IGN position, the DRLs lights up. As soon as you turn on the parkers, the DRLs dim to act as parkers. The indicators are in the center cluster of LEDs.

Amts..I'm happy with the version 1.0, although I did initially want DRL's I honestly don't feel like I need them as I don't do the kays!! I soldered my 3 wires to the original wires, although it was a bit tricky!! Good work tho with the chase!
