  • Tough Dog Adjustable 2" liftkit

Has anyone examined the Tough Dog suspension range, has anyone fitted Tough Dog to their Prado?
In particular the 9 stage adjustable (with 2" lift) setup.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers,
    Paul.

I know of a guy here in Alice who fitted them then removed them as he found the ride far too harsh. He ended up putting in OME alround. There designed for much real heavy offroading and comp work rather then alround touring etc. I had TD in my Vitara until I started to bend the suspension mounts on the springs and shocks, it cost me a small fortune to repair. I ended up sticking to the OME.

OK just to balance the books. I have the Toughdog 2" lift and the 9 stage adjustables fitted to my 120 series and I am extremely happy. I have comfort springs not HD and poly airs in the rear. The shocks are set to about 6 front and 4 rear and it is as comfortable as or better than standard with better body control. No concerns from me about harshness or anything else. Like all things make sure you tell the supplier, whoever that is, what you want and it is up to them to match their suspension with your driving style and needs.

Do you find that you adjust the setup for dirt/onroad/beach etc... or have you found that the one setting pretty much does you..?

        Cheers,

On the beach and fire trails I leave it alone and it is fine. If I was in heavy going with lots of wheel articulation (only done 7,000km and haven't ventured that far yet) I will back off the damping to 2 or 3 front and rear. This is for two reasons, one is to let the suspension rise and fall more easily and secondly with the flow rate increased in the shocks the oil should not get as hot.

Thanx for the info.. The change of settings makes perfect sense but I wasn't sure that in the real world, the 9 stages would actually be utilised. The standard adjustable setup works great on the Discovery and the like, so am glad the Tough Dog will find some varied uses. As I live on the Coffs Coast, there is a big variety of off-road applications, beach, trails, potted dirt, hills etc, basically eveything from level 1 through to level 5 stuff and scarily beyond...
Can't wait to install the kit and give her a burl...

            Cheers,
            Paul.

Well I went the 2" lift via Tough Dog 9-stage adjustables, with the in-cab unit. All I can say is AWESOME!..
              Even the wife's smiling
clocked up about 750k's of mostly blacktop so far and I cannot believe the difference it's made.. some cruel off-road work to come in a couple weeks, so that will be the true test of it's worth.. but I'm quietly confident..
The adjustablity is great... can soften it off in straight bumpy stretches and stiffen it up in the tight twisty bits.. all on the fly.. sticks like you know what to a blanket...
              BIG SMILE...

Is the 'In cab' unit the Rancho one? or do ToughDog make there own.

The in-cab is the Rancho one... branded as "RCX"... I've since replaced the tungsten globes in the gauge displays with green L.E.D.'s... Muuuch better...
There's a picture of it in my shed :

The incab unit looks good, I may consider one of these when I update the OME to Tough Dog. Thanks Paul.

I really have to work out how to paste pics into the message section...

I can't speak highly enough of the tough dog springs and shocks.. make sure you get the full deal... they work awesome...
Also, make sure they place the rear adjusters on the inside of the wheel, this prevents them being knocked off by rocks etc...
The compressor is small, so fits neatly on the battery side of the car, next to the master cylinder.. and also, take out the tungsten globes straight away and replace with LED's.. the globes tend to pop too quickly, and the LED's look better too, mine are green..
How do you find the OME setup for your beast...?

                        Cheers,

Compared to Yota's prado it looks saggy...(he has TD) and I have no load in the back. whereas his has the full setup (Dual batts, winch, drawers, fridge etc)

Re: Tough Dog Adjustable 2" liftkit

                            Hi guys,

I have also gone the Tough Dog 40mm Adjustable Shock and Springs option. This has given me over 2 inches in lift (my standard springs had sagged a fair bit!).

I went for Tough Dog because I trust the local Opposite Lock blokes in Orange (fellow Canobolas 4WD Club members) and I like the idea of adjustable shocks (although it is not easy to adjust them if you don't have the deluxe in-cabin set up)

I was recommended Heavy Duty Springs for the front and Medium Springs for the rear.

Paid $1633 all up - including a wheel alignment. I'm heading out bush with a mate tomorrow so I'll have a good opportunity to put them through their paces :P

Re: Tough Dog Adjustable 2" liftkit

See my Toughdogs stuffed again post on this site.

The rears have been replaced 3 times under warranty and the fronts twice. Kalgoorlie to Cape York killed the first set in 2006 but since then just general dirt road work has finished off the rest. I have chucked the rears and replaced the leaky ones with a set of stock 09 Prado shocks until I find something decent.

Now I find the 2inch lift springs have sagged on the left side.
