  • External battery & CF 50

Just purchased a new Waeco CF-50 fridge as I have a trip up to Fraser this month. Instead of getting a dual battery system installed I am looking at using the Waeco external battery pack as short term solution to run the fridge overnight. I am looking at getting a dual battery system installed next year.

The intention is to hook up the battery pack to one of the accessory plugs (so it charges whilst I am driving) and then hook the fridge up to it.

Has anyone in this forum run a similar solution with their fridge? How long do these external battery systems usually last with a CF-50?

    Hi Fungi

My mother had a similar set up over here in WA last christmas.

If I remember right, the battery pack ran the fridge for two days non stop, with no recharge before the fridge started warming up.

would envisage that if you are only using it during the night, and charging it whilst driving around during the day, you should have no problems keeping the tinnies cold.

I am currently looking into getting both, as well as a dual battery system under the hood. One thing I did note about the battery packs is that you can connect two packs together for longer output life.

Hope you have fun at frazer

      Waeco 60L and Coolpower pack

      Hi mate.
I've got the Waeco 60L fridge and the optional Waeco Coolpower battery pack. Opposite Lock also installed a heavier duty charging unit in the rear with "Always On" capability.
Only had one drama. The bloody "error" light was flashing there for a while when running the fridge from the rear or the battery pack. Took it back to Opposite Lock and had it repaired under warranty. "Thermal Overload" or something? I think they just replace a 6amp fuse with a 9amp fuse or something?
Anyway, Its been a great fridge. Using it right now on 240V up at the inlaws for Xmas!!
Admittedly I have only camped for 3 or 4 nights in a row but I have never had any dramas with the fridge cause I find we always go off exploring in the Prado - giving me the opportunity to charge up the Waeco Coolpower unit for another night.
Anyway, Merry Xmas to everyone. Love the sight. Don't usually submit many posts but enjoy reading everyone elses!

you could try using a flyer battery pack. I had the flyer disconnected from the car battery for 2 days with my 40L engal and the battery could have gone for another 3-5 days before needing recharging (was running the engal at about 2 degrees)..

best of both worlds with the flyer battery pack, its a dual battery system, and it can also be disconnected when needed, and even left to run the fridge and the campsite.

check out my trip report on fraser island in the trips section...

          Fridge power

I've run this setupwith my Waeco 50 for many years now with no major problems. I did find that the battery struggled to recharge itself through the standard cabling but run a good quality wire from the car battery & it recharges fine. Without recharging, I found the Waeco battery only gave me about 2 days in hot weather, but if you do plenty of driving during the day, it was fully charged up again. I don't think they are any cheaper than a second battery but it dos give you the flexibility to take the fridge out & use it around the campsite which is not possible with a second battery if you can't get your car close enough. I've even taken my Waeco to Adventure world & run it off the battery. Before you tell me to have just paid the $3- for a Coke & $8- for a hamburger, what I liked was that my drinks were a lot colder than the ones they sold, our lunch was nice & fresh AND I didn't have to wait 45 minutes in the food queue just to get a drink. Trust me, there are enough queues at that place without having to queue for food as well.

I've had a Waeco 60 litre for 12 months and had a lot of issues with it plugged into the standard accessory socket in the back. It kept getting low voltage errors. Fixed it using the standard Waeco wiring kit - easy to fit and works pefect - cost about $100.

I have a 130 AH deep cycle battery in one of those boxes with the circuit breaker and two sockets. Cost about $220 bucks all up and has run my fridge for 5 days straight (and 12 volt lights in the evening) . Heavy though - about 40kg's.
