  • Newb lift questions...

    Hi all,

I have a petrol '99 prado rv. I'm looking at getting a 2" lift to help me handle some larger tyres safely... 265/75/16's AT or MT or so.

    My questions are...

1/ What's the differences and benefits of spring lift vs body lift?
2/ If I was to do the work myself does a lift kit contain everything i need? AND what are the components in the kit?
3/ Is it very hard to do?
4/ I understand lovell (HD?) springs and bilstein shocks to be the go for the prado... any additional thoughts on that or alternatives?

    Cheers!
    Ben

I have just installed a Lovells Springs /Lovells shock and struts 2" lift in my 98 model and I'm very happy with them after 4000klm.

For around $900 installed it was hard to justify the cost of Billies for what I needed.

What sort of body work needs doing?

        2 inch lift

        Hi all

I note in a previous post that its mentioned about trimming inside the front guards.

I took mine to a great wheel alingnment bloke Col Robinson

He adjusted the wheel position to stop the scrub out of the mudflaps etc

        This has wrked a treat

Any one interested I can scan a copy of the settings used

          Thanks everyone,

In my research I came about this...

          http://www.4wd1.com/quicklift.htm

Has anyone had anything to do with these? Are they worth looking into further? The adjustible option is attractive. Anyones thoughts?

          Cheers!

Interesting concept. I looked at them when the front end had sagged miserably and I was looking for options.

I went with a full OME 2" kit which, IMHO, gives a much more balanced ride. I was worried about re-using the existing front coils - which were crap - and also about mixing the components - front and back - and how that would affect the ride quality on and off road.

            My 2 cents.

            Cheers

              suspension

Hardly cheap as well ..$595 for two front struts. you could buy some good quality bilstein struts and lovels springs for that.

I fitted 265/75R16 BFG MT's on my standard suspension. Now my car was still at around 740mm (standard) in the front so that helps too. The BFG's fitted, but I was warned about the issues when the suspension compresses & the wheels are turned at about 45 degrees. So I went straight from the tyre place to the wheel aligner - without incident too!

We adjuster the caster to maximum, which actually brought the wheels forward about 1cm. This was enough to avoid rubbing unless you hit a driveway or something similar at speed!

So yes you can go to 265/75R16's, you just need a wheel alignment to help. That way the car stays in standard condition too.

Now that the tyres are worn abit, they don't rub even on rough tracks!

                  Cheers
