  • New Towbar, New Noise

    Hi guys,

Got a quick question. I had a factory towbar installed at the last service and now whenever the drivers side indicators are on, I hear a distracting clicking noise from the passanger's rear indicator.

Took it back to Toyota W'Gabba and they told me that its by design as there's a relay back there to power the towbar electricals.

Anyone else have this 'excpected' behaviour?

    Cheers,
    Pete

i hear the relay every now and then... but normally only when the middle row seats are folded up, or down, which ever way they would be when you get the most space back there!

Got the same noise, you should have got the diesel, hard to hear over the rattle. lol . If you look in the Jack compatment at the right rear there should be a small relay, you could probably wrap it in some type of noise damper cloth if it becomes anoying. I noticed mine is not even screwed down, as ther is a place for it, typical of toyo service.

        Peter,

Same problem, same dealer. I got my Toyota towbar fitted at Southside and I now get the same clicking from the rear as I used to get from the front when the indicators are illuminated. I have had this noise since the towbar was fitted, but mine is both indicators although I can hear the driver's side louder than the passenger side (maybe becuase it is slightly closer to the driver  ). I have investigated a bit further and they both click the same from inside the cargo area.

Minor thing I know, but it wasn't happening before Toyota but the towbar on, and it's never happened on other vehicles that I have had fitted with towbars.

Anyone else have this problem with standard Toyota towbars? Is it a problem with other towbars (ARB Towmaster, etc).

i would assume so as the wiring would be the same place.....

Yep, it's the relay in the cubbyhole where the jack hides.

It's really noticeable if you've been driving the car around for a while then had the towbar fitted. Unlike a lot of other mid-sized and large wagons the Prado is exceptionally well soundproofed - so when you add a little noise to the inside of the cab - you hear it.

My 2 cents - turn the radio up.

            Cheers

OOPS, just noticed I should have said left rear, just don't be behind me with an indicator on as I'll probably turn the opposite direction, lol.

Could it be scotch locks used in the wiring??

Yes i also have the the noise and mine was fitted at sci fleet northisde, so i don't think it has anything to do with the dealer, but i think i might question this next service.

There is some other discussion earlier in other threads.

The prado towbar wiring NEEDS to have accessory relays fitted to make it all work properly (Eg not upset fuses & computer)
This is the clicking you are hearing, the towbar loom that comes with the bar has relays up in the jack compartment.

I simply pulled mine down and wrapped them with some soft foam and cable tied it there.
I also put a piece of Acoustic deadening material under the foam on the relay case to stop the "click" of the case. (This stuff takes noise/vibration and turns it into dead energy somehow?) Kind of like a tar thingamajig. Car audio shops sell it.

One of the two items worked because I cant hear them at all anymore.

                      Thanks Piggy,

I've recently read that post the other day about your approach lighting system to Piggy International airport. I knew this would be right up your alley...

The wife has been bagging me out as I thought it was just me and I was going to rain holy fire down upon my local service dept as I thought this was a unique problem as I have never had this occur in other (non 4WD) vehicles that I have owned with tow packages. The comment from the peanut gallery was akin to "told you the guys on Pradopoint would sort it out." ops:

                        Whew!

Well, that's a relief. When the service guy told me it's expected, I wasn't too happy, but what can you do?

Thanks again for all the feedback guys, really appreciate it.

Piggy, I'll defo head down to an audio dealer, maybe even Clark Rubber will have the acoustic material at 1/10th of the cost

                        Cheeers,

If you cant find it I prob have a small piece I can post you over if need be.
Its called DYNAMAT. http://www.dynamat.com/ (warning its not real cheap!)
You may find wrapping them in foam does the trick anyway.

                            Clark Rubber Rocks!

Guys, a quick update. I purchased a $2.60 piece of acoustic foam with the same dimensions as the jack cover. Placed it in the hole and the noise went away.

                            Magic!
