  • New/replacement keys

One of my master keys - the only key i have used since new, has cracked its head..

when it is twisted in the ignition it nearly comes apart..

lucky i still have 4 months left on the warranty as the replacement key costs $325.

    ouch.

oh well.. New key for free sounds good.. if it wasnt under warranty i would have used some superglue for the fix.

Talking about keys. I went snorkling for 2hrs with prado key in my pocket. Opened it up after to dry out and is all good. Has excellent protection from water getting in. As you pointed out, would suck to have to pay that much to replace.

Mine is broken and out of warranty DOH DOH, noticed last weekend big crack across the face , you can feel it when you turn it in the ignition also.

On another note has anybody noticed the Hilux doesnt have the auto start feature like the Prado ( v6 Hilux ) , You know turn key to start and release, cool feature ! Dont think the Diesel Prado does it either ?

Hey Guys there was a ebay seller selling "master key" blanks without the radio internals for $10 each located out of Sydney.

Will see if i can find it again.

        Regards.

well got the new key.. but it just occurred to me that there is a working (but going to break) master key that has been coded to unlock my car still at toyota or the key place (where they duplicated it).

I think I would be asking to visibly see it being destroyed or ask if you can have it back because I cannot imagine it going back to Toyota as proof.

I know this is only slightly related but in the same topic.
Our key got stuck IN the ignition once.

About 2 days before a trip I jumped in, stuck the key in, and nothing.
It didnt turn. I couldn't do anything.
After about 1/2 hour called toyota.
Dude came out tried for 1/2 hour. and said he was going to another call and come back.

When he came back. POOF. it came out easy??????

And another time (at band camp) We went in the hot artesian bore/ spa at Monkey Mia and guess what was in my pocket. The key.
Lucky it still worked and is still working as we were 1000K from home (the spare keys also).

Gone are the days of stopping at a mister minute key cutter shoe fixer arnt they!!!!!!!

One of mine is broken and out of warranty as well. Have had quote from independent locksmith of $100. This is a lot cheaper than the tojo option. Just havn't got around to getting it done. Other key is working fine and lets face it, you only need one key to start the car.

I only got one key with my 2nd hand GXL. A common complaint from what I read - once one key dies most people don't want to pay the price to get another one.

Can an independant locksmith code the key with all the electrogizmology ?

I would like to have a second key on the trip.

                  Cheers

there's probably a "turn the key three times, flick the indicator, turn the lights on and blink, pull out the headrest and screem "who's you daddy" while licking the rear vision mirror" then press the button on your key to the tune of advance australia fair and it'll code it to work in the car....

                    or something like that...

I was lucky to get two originals and a service key when i bought mine second hand. have had the batteries changed a few times and the missus has put it through the wash once or twice and they all work perfectly...

He assured me that "electrogizmology" should be fine ( . . . and I thought he made up that word!). I do however have the broken key to give him so I don't know if he intends to start from scratch or steal bits out of the old key. This thread has reminded me to do something about it, so I will follow up next week.

I actually carry my spare key in my wallet and always have. I can remember once out about 100k's from Julia Creek on the way from Darwin to Cooktown in an old Landcruiser before the days of remote fuel lid openers and I stopped to refuel out of drums in my trailer.

Key could be removed from ignition without turning engine off so seeing as I had been driving with all lights blazing for 10 hours decided to leave engine running.....Anyway about 200 k's further on thought oh shit, I hadn't removed keys from fuel cap, yep they were gone along with house and every other key that I owned. We drove back for about a 100 k's but couldn't find them and ended up having to buy new ignition, and door locks and was not happy

A word of warning to those of you who only have one key. If you do loose this key you will be up for a lot more than just the cost of a new key.
As this is a master key it will be needed to code any new keys.
If you buy a blank without the electronic guts in it, the immoblizer will not disarm and although it will turn the lock it will not be able to start the vehicle.

The new Toyota hand held tester might be able to code new keys without a master but really doubt it.....

                          Has anyone had this happen?

I will talk to a mate who is workshop foreman at Toyota dealership to confirm.

you can use the spare key that has no electronic stuff on it to open and start it.. it just cant open the glove box.

I bought mine used also, it had the two " proper keys " but not the service key, both keys were worn looking like they circulated them ! both work fine, the one my wife uses has the big crack in it. Anybody know if you can just buy the plastic outside bit instead of replacing the whole key as it works fine is just cracked.
