View Full Version : Rear light in bumper bar

A mate repaired a crack in my bumper on the weekend (fantastic job by the way) and we noticed after taking the bumper bar off that the rear 'reflectors' are actually lights. The aussie version obviously doesnt have the globes etc in them but the wiring is there.

Two questions...are they tail lights or stop lights? and has anyone seen a working light in that position?

I'm thinking of wiring them up.

I reackon they are for real heavy fog and are probably connected to the fog light switch overseas.... Has anyone noticed when travelling behind some Hyundais and BMW's at night, that they sometimes have a REALLY bright red light at the rear??? Like a brake light in brightness. :x

yeah, you're right, they're fog lights.. have seen them in action when i was in Norway..

I've heard that while most cops will let front fog lights slide, they tend to get very annoyed very quickly at the rear ones being on when not foggy..

shame they don't catch the b##$tards in excell's who drive with them on all the time!

they would look pretty good with park lights in them though... or ordinary brake lights..

Our Impreza has one of these fog lights, used sensibly they are a great thing - we live in the mountains and often the mist is so heavy you have to do 60 in a 100 zone. Ours turns off when the engine is stopped and doesn't come back on until it's selected - this is a good feature for those bobos like Excel drivers who forget to turn them off.

These bobos are easily fixed with the dose of high beam.

I've often looked at these lights on the back of the 120 with the idea of turning them into reverse lights, I think the 120 could do with more rear light when backing up. I bought some replacement stock front fog lights (as spares) and they almost fit but they are too wide.

I guess with a lot of skill they could be totally customized to have a clear lens and still retain the red reflector (for ADR).

But alas, I don't have that sort of skill/motivation/time.

Cheers,

Drew.

So is it just a matter of chucking a few globes in to make it all come to life, or does it involve "surgery" requiring skills that I do not have?

surgery required... i pulled them out the other day and the back of it is sealed, i.e. no hole to put a bulb in..

went searching on ebay and found these (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/LED-Multy-Voltage-Clearance-aux-blinker-8-LEDs_W0QQitemZ120107175486QQihZ002QQcategoryZ10256 0QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)(red of course) which i've got in the mail.. going to cut out the hole and mount these in there hooking them up to the park lights...

see what it looks like!

i reckon they look fantasic!

next step is to put a switch on them so i can flick them off if required....

currently they come on with park lights, but i'm still tossing up between having them come on with brakes instead... undecided there!
