  • Electronic Rust Proofing

    Hi all,

I am looking at isntalling an electronic rust proofing system into my 120 series and wondering if anyone has had experience (good or bad) with the ERPS or the CounterAct systems.

We will be using our Prado for 1-3 beach trips a year.

Is there anything I should be looking out for and does anyone know any reputable installers in Brisbane?

IF there are other systems out there which provide better coverage that's cool too.

    Ta

JUst read your thread. I had an ERPS installed in my 90 Series. It needed 8 pathces from front to back to cover the whole vehicle properly. ERPS have their installers and they are all fairly good. Cost around $600-700. The one I have now is a single unit that covers the whole vehicle - about the same price. I don't know what to believe about these things because when I sold the 90 series, I had to remove the second battery for the new vehicle. Where the battery holder had rubbed against the sidewall of the motor bay, there was surface rust there. So It's hard to say how far that would have gone - I sold it too soon. If you haven't installed it yet, just ring ERPS and they will put you on to their guy....lives at Sandgate way. Cheers

      Hi Walkabout,

Thanks for the reply I had the ERPS system installed by the guy from Sandgate as recommended by ERPS, I think his name is Robert Burnet?

He was pretty nice and recommended the 6 coupler system which I had installed last Wednesday. There's just the one booster unit and then 6 black patches are glued to the walls (2 in the engine bay, one on either side of the rear passengar's foot guard, and the last two in each corner of the boot. His installation was pretty tidy. I got this system installed for $630 on site at my work so pretty happy about it.

I did an extra test on the body and there is an opposite flow of current from the couplers to the body so we'll see how it goes.

Anyways, I have his contact details if anyone else would like an installer.

Interesting to hear about the rusting problem you had around the second battery. I don't have a second battery installed yet but will defo make sure that it's clear from the sidewall.

      Take care and happy Easter!

All technicians I have talked to in regards to electronic rust prevention say it's a crock of shit, It's actually banned in the USA.
Cathodic and capacitive systems can't work in a Automative situation.
Although I'd love to be proven wrong.
The one thing I can't get my head around is if it works why is there a limited waranty? 7 years from new install? Any car washed after beach use
will last this long without showing major rust.
Just happens to be reasonably priced so that most people that pay $55+
for their Vehicles think what the hell I'll give it a go.
        Be interested to see replies.

Firstly I have no personal experience with such rust preventative systems however I come from an electrical background and I agree pretty much with sublib25.

The system works great in many situations including marine environments etc HOWEVER...................... such a system working on a vehicle which is totally insulated by its tyres ........ In my humble opinion - I don't think so

Aren't most modern vehicles galvanised anyway?

And it's interesting to hear that these systems aren't used in the USA and Canada. Rust is a big issue in the north of the USA and Canada as they use tons of salt on the roads to get rid of the snow. Most cars rust very badly in these conditions. You would think if electronic rust prevention worked well they'd sell million over there.

Also, you'd think the manufacturers of these systems would offer some examples like: "Here's two vehicles used at a sand mine, one was fitted with ERP and the other wasn't, just look at all the rust on the other vehicle!" Or something.

I don't mean to criticise anyone's decision to purchase electronic rust prevention as I don't know all that much about it.

Might ask when I go to the camping show as to why they don't have a Vehicle without protection that has documented proof that it's been to the same locations as their Demo.
Would be a great advertising tool.I'd bet it would look no different if treated the same.
              My 2 cents.

                Re: Electronic Rust Proofing

I have just bought a white 2005 Toyota Prado Turbo Diesel. I live on the sunshine coast and get sea air and go to Fraser Island once a year - hence rust. I was just wanting people's opinion on the best option for rust proofing. I have looked at Electronic Rust Proofing Systems and the traditional spray technique. Does anyone have any personal experience in either of these that may influence my decision?

                  Re: Electronic Rust Proofing

From the reading I've done on the Electronic Rust Protection, I'd have to agree with the lads that the jury's definitely out as to weather you get any benefit from it. The pure fact is that we've come a long way since the 70's when tales surfaced of Monaro's being rusty even before they left the factory. I think you'd need to treat a modern Prado pretty harshly to get any significant rust appearing within a few years. I'd lean towards a tough coating on the underside to prevent too much damage from chips and scrapes etc. Just my opinion.

                    Re: Electronic Rust Proofing

I know that our company has tried ERPS systems in their front end loaders in the past. The front end loaders operate in a highly corrosive area and the first thing to rust on them with the ERPS installed were the pads/couplers themselves! They actually rusted off...

My biggest concern with the new Prado is the foam inserts in the bash plates. My 90 series saw plenty of action along the coast around Albany, Esperance, Denmark etc and I ended up with a few perforations through the front bash plates. This was depsite always giving the car a good wash down with fresh water after every trip. I'll have to be doubly carefull with the 120.

                          Re: Electronic Rust Proofing

I had the underbody protection done. Simply because my old Hilux took a fair punishing underneath. If gravel roads are your thing then something like this is probably worthwhile. Especially as they also do up under your wheelarches which can cop a beating on stony / pebbly roads. Toyota say it also acts as a further noise reduction but the coating doesn't really seem thick enough to me to have much effect in that area. Copped a bit of overspray up into the engine bay but it wasn't too bad and I suppose it's a little unavoidable. For me I thought it was worthwhile to have that extra level of protection underneath. Opinions are divided about it though. I guess it all depends on how long you intend on keeping the vehicle. I intend to keep mine a while so took steps right from the beginning to help it last into old age. Not worth it though in my opinion for blacktop only users who will sell in 2 or 3 years.

Thanks for replying, I've decided to go for the underbody protection as well. I plan on keeping the car for a few years and think it's the best option.

My workmate drives a Falcon XH Ute and has had a rust thingy fitted since the vehicle was almost new. Anyway lets just say the car has been to the panel beaters and had rust cut out a few times. The vehicle does not get driven off the bitumen or tow boats. I know Falcons can rust ( i have had a few including an xh Ute )but surely with the box of tricks it should stop it. may be not hey. However i have had the black bitumen looking under body spray applied and would have this again it worked very well and protected the underneath quite well.
